What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are placed over the front-facing surfaces of the teeth to cover up aesthetic imperfections. The durable, natural-looking porcelain that’s used can effectively conceal a single damaged tooth or a mouthful of aesthetic flaws, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Misshapen teeth or teeth that appear too small/too large
  • Noticeable spaces between teeth
  • Damaged/worn/chipped teeth
  • Stained/discolored teeth

The Process of Getting Veneers

In most cases, the design and creation of a brand-new veneer will require at least two appointments here in Washington, PA. First, the natural teeth will be lightly buffed and shaped to accommodate the veneer’s eventual placement. We’ll also capture a detailed impression of the tooth or teeth and decide on the ideal enamel shade for the new restoration. All of this important information is forwarded to a trusted dental laboratory; in the meantime, we will place a temporary veneer so that patients can get used to the look and feel for the next couple of weeks.

When you arrive for your second visit, the teeth will be cleansed before the new, permanent veneer is securely bonded into place. Our dentists will take the time to make any final adjustments and tweaks so that you’re fully satisfied with the finished result! We will also provide detailed care instructions regarding how to properly brush and floss your new smile addition.

The Benefits of Veneers

Veneers have become very popular throughout the years thanks to their numerous benefits. Here are just some of the most prominent ones you can experience:

  • Natural Appearance: The porcelain used to make veneers appears just like natural tooth enamel does.
  • Quick Process: Veneers can be placed in as little as two visits.
  • Permanent Whitening: Since veneers are more resistant to staining than natural tooth enamel, you don’t need to worry about discoloration from pigmented foods or beverages.
  • Long-Lasting: When cared for properly with regular cleanings and exams, veneers can last a significant amount of time.

Questions and FAQs On Veneers

Veneers are an excellent cosmetic option if you are looking for a dramatic smile makeover, but they aren’t right for everyone. Before you are able to determine whether or not they are the best cosmetic solution for you, it’s crucial that you understand their cost. Veneers aren’t generally covered by dental insurance because they are considered an elective treatment, but this doesn’t always mean that you’re left completely on your own. With payment plans through CareCredit, you can split the cost of treatment into manageable monthly installments to fit your budget. We also have an in-house dental plan that can help to make preventive care and other treatments more affordable. Talk to our friendly team members to determine what financial option is best for you.

Because veneers have to be replaced eventually, they’re not considered a permanent cosmetic solution. However, the process of getting them is considered to be irreversible. During your first appointment, Dr. Bartusiak will remove a thin layer of enamel to ensure the veneers fit properly on the teeth. Once the enamel is removed, it’ll never grow back. For that reason, the prepared teeth will always need to be covered with either crowns or veneers.

After your teeth are prepared, you’ll wear temporary veneers while your permanent ones are being made. During this time, you’ll need to avoid hard foods (i.e. ice), sticky foods (i.e., gum, toffee, caramel), and dark-colored foods (i.e., red wine, soda, tea). These items can ruin your smile, causing your restorations to break or become stained. Once your permanent veneers are in place, you’ll want to continue exercising caution around these foods.

When you first get veneers in Washington, you may have difficulty speaking or making certain words. That happens because the tongue is not used to speaking with the veneers in place. Even though each shell is extremely thin, the tiny difference in thickness affects the way the tongue moves. Fortunately, any lisp you develop is temporary and should go away as soon as you get used to your new smile. You can speed up the adjustment process by reading aloud, repeating difficult-to-pronounce words, and having more conversations with loved ones.

Since veneers cannot change the actual position of your teeth and jaw, they’re not an effective solution for severe bite problems. Many dentists will only recommend veneers for bite issues that affect your appearance but do not cause significant oral health issues. For instance, they can address mild open bite by making the teeth look longer and wider so that they appear to line up correctly. Veneers can also be used to hide small gaps between the teeth.

Dr. Barry and his staff are wonderful. They make you feel comfortable the moment you walk in. During your visit, they are always asking if you need anything and if you’re okay. Every staff member is very friendly. I have had both routine cleaning and dental work done and am extremely pleased with both. I definitely recommend this office for your dental needs.

Fantastic experience. Started seeing Dr. Barry for a dental emergency a few months ago. I tried contacting 10+ dentists in the area, none of them would see me. Crazy, right? I'm very happy those 10+ dentists declined me as a patient. I had an appointment scheduled with Dr. Barry the next day. Professional, knowledgeable, friendly staff. Nothing but good things to say as a new patient. And no, I wasn't provided a gift card to leave this review. I did so on my own free will.
